چکیده

In this paper we assess the potential of rich tactile notifications on mobile phones. Many mobile phone users use vibration output for various types of notification on their phone. Currently, tactile output in phones is limited to one single actuator that can potentially present patterns based on different vibration intensity over time. To explore the possible design space, we conducted experiments with up to 6 actuators included in a phone prototype to find out about the user experience that can be created with multi-vibration output in a handheld device. The dimensions of the resulting design space are comprised of the location of the active actuators, the intensity of the vibration, and the variation of these parameters over time. Based on several user studies and interviews, we suggest design guidelines for rich tactile output facilitated by several distinct actuators. We show where vibration motors should optimally be placed and that different information can be reliably communicated by producing different patterns of vibration output using a small number of

FeelTact: Rich Tactile Interactions and Navigation, an Example With a Mobile Game in a City

With the ever-increasing number of applications for mobile phones, we are more and more likely to be confronted to a problem of a separation from our environment when we look at our screen. Besides, we may seek for more discretion in the use of these applications. This is why we propose an approach, which doesn’t use the screen as the main output device. We present rich tactile feedback via an ...

Crossmodal Interaction: Using Audio or Tactile Displays in Mobile Devices

Research Area and Topic Description This PhD research involves multimodal and mobile interaction. Mobile device users can be in a variety of different situations where visual, audio, or tactile feedback is not appropriate e.g. when driving, visual feedback could go unnoticed. This research aims to investigate the design of auditory/tactile crossmodal icons which can provide an alternative form ...

Towards Designing User Interfaces on Mobile Touch- screen Devices for People with Visual Impairment

Although touch screens have great input flexibility, they are largely inaccessible to people with visual impairment. One of the issues with touch screens is the lack of clear tactile feedback, which is critical for visually-impaired people. We developed SemFeel, a tactile feedback technology that can express some semantic information by using multiple vibration motors in concert. We believe tha...

Spatial Tactile Feedback Support for Mobile Touch-screen Devices

Spatial Tactile Feedback Support for Mobile Touch-screen Devices Koji Yatani Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Computer Science University of Toronto 2011 Mobile touch-screen devices have the capability to accept flexible touch input, and can provide a larger screen than mobile devices with physical buttons. However, many of the user interfaces found in mobile touch-screen devices req...
